Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the first International Conference on Smart Machining Systems (ICSMS).  As you will see in our conference program, the conference topics cover a broad range of technology areas:

·        Development and improvement of knowledge about machining processes and equipment

·        Unambiguous and interoperable representation and communication of such knowledge

·        Effective integration of such knowledge into machine tools and manufacturing enterprises. 

We believe that bringing academic and industrial researchers together to review the state-of-the-art in such technological areas as well as to identify future challenges is a crucial step towards realizing smart machining systems.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee and the International Program Committee, we thank you for your participation and hope that you will be intrigued, encouraged and energized about the new research perspectives, which are needed for cost effective development and implementation of smart machining systems.
